Kernville tends to be swallowed up in California, largely because there are just too many beautiful locations to visit in this incredible state. But this little town offers a lot of nuance that can scratch an itch you didn't even know you had. Instead of the ocean, you have the mighty Kern River. Instead of a bustling downtown, you have a city center that's a bit more rustic and a lot more personal. We'll give you just a few reasons to plan a trip.
This is really what the city is known for. While the rapids may be relatively at the beginning of the season, that will all change once the snows really begin to melt toward the end of the summer. There are a wide variety of companies that offer rafting trips, many of which go overnight. Or visitors come from far and wide to camp along the river and kayak or raft down at their own risk. If you're not quite into the death-defying stunts and tricks in the white water, there are calmer places along the way where you can tube for a while as you lie in the sun.
Have you ever wanted to go down a water slide that wasn't made of plastic? If you visit Sequoia National Forest, you'll find a natural waterslide that will get your heart racing. This slide is not exactly advertised, but you can find it if you're taking the Western Divide Highway to Lloyd Meadow Road. From there, you'll go for a bit of a hike until you reach the slide. Then just get ready to don your bathing suit, cross your arms over your chest, and to take flight. While the slide isn't technically located in Kernville, it's close enough for a day trip and definitely worth the drive.
You don't have to go very far before you see just how pretty Kernville is, and it's not just the river (though that certainly helps). The people, local businesses, and community institutions are so charming that you'd be hard-pressed not to smile. Stop by Ewing's any time of day for a meal right by the water. Check out the brewery for a pint and a snack. Do a little asking around town to find a night of live music or the best glass of wine.
If you're visiting Kernville for the first time, the key is just to get out and explore. As you take in the sights, sounds, and people of the town, you'll get a better idea of where to go, what to do, and how to make the most of your trip.
